How to wear a cap with an outfit

A cap is the quickest way to make an outfit look casual on purpose, and also the easiest to get wrong. The difference is in the shape and the colour. Every outfit below includes a cap, from washed cotton baseball caps to wool ones.

01

Choose a washed, low cap

Unstructured caps in washed cotton sit lower and look softer than stiff, high-fronted ones. A vintage-style baseball cap works with nearly every casual outfit.

02

Painter's and six-panel caps

A short-brimmed painter's cap or a plain cotton six-panel cap suits workwear: chore coats, denim jackets and striped tops.

03

Wool and patterned caps

A wool cap, plain or in houndstooth, gives some of a beanie's warmth with the shape of a cap and suits wool jackets and hoodies. A patchwork or trucker cap is louder; wear it with a plain outfit.

04

Match the cap to one other piece

Pick a cap colour that already appears in the outfit: a navy cap with a navy top, a grey cap with grey jeans, a cream cap with cream trousers. A cap in a new colour reads as an accent and should be the only one.

05

Keep the rest of the outfit casual

A cap belongs with jeans, sneakers, hoodies and work jackets. With a tailored jacket or in a smart casual office it looks out of place, and it comes off indoors.

Questions

Do caps go with every outfit?

Caps go with casual outfits built on jeans, T-shirts, hoodies and work jackets. They don't suit tailoring or smart casual settings.

What colour cap goes with everything?

Navy, grey, black and washed cream match the widest range of outfits.

Should you wear a cap indoors?

In a restaurant, an office or someone's home, take it off. On the street, on a train or in a casual café it is fine.
