How to wear baggy jeans

Wide and baggy jeans are now a default cut in men's casual outfits, and they are easier to wear than they look. The point is balance: when the legs are full, the jacket, shoes and length have to work with that volume. Every outfit below uses wide, baggy or relaxed jeans.

01

Choose the cut: relaxed, baggy or extra baggy

Relaxed straight jeans are the easiest start; they sit close at the hip and fall straight. Baggy jeans are fuller through the whole leg, and extra baggy cuts add more width again.

If you are new to the shape, move one step wider at a time rather than going straight to the widest cut.

02

Pick a lighter or washed denim

Light blue, vintage and grey washes suit wide jeans better than stiff raw denim, which can look heavy in a big cut. A washed leg also pairs easily with suede, brown and cream.

03

Keep the jacket short

Wide jeans look best with jackets that end at or just below the waist: a chore coat, a denim jacket, a short suede jacket. A long coat over baggy jeans tends to swamp the outfit unless the coat has its own volume.

04

Wear shoes with some bulk

Slim, low shoes disappear under a wide hem. Suede sneakers with a thicker sole or a padded shape hold their own, and a coloured pair in red or green gives the outfit a clear finish.

05

Decide where the hem lands

Let the hem rest on the shoe with one soft break, or let it stack slightly for a looser look. What does not work is a hem that drags under the heel. Have them shortened if they reach the floor behind the shoe.

06

Finish with a cap or beanie

Headwear balances the extra volume at the bottom. A baseball cap suits the lighter washes; a beanie works with hoodies and wool jackets.

Questions

What shoes go with baggy jeans?

Sneakers with some volume, such as suede court or skate-style shoes with a thicker sole. Slim minimal sneakers get lost under the hem.

What top should you wear with baggy jeans?

A T-shirt or long-sleeve top with a short jacket, an overshirt or a hoodie. Keep jackets around waist length so the proportions stay clear.

Should baggy jeans touch the floor?

No. The hem should rest on the shoe with a small break or a light stack, not drag under the heel.

Are baggy jeans smart casual?

Relaxed straight jeans in a clean wash can be, with a knit or overshirt and suede shoes. Very wide, heavily washed jeans are casual.
