Winter outfits for men

A casual winter outfit is three layers and a hat: something thin next to the skin, something warm in the middle and a jacket that blocks the wind. The outfits in this guide are tagged for winter on Moidello and show how those layers combine with jeans and sneakers.

01

Start with a long-sleeve base

A long-sleeve T-shirt, a polo or a striped top is the base layer. Cotton is fine for a day in town; a fine merino layer is warmer if you are outside for long.

02

Add a warm mid layer

A cashmere or wool hoodie, a rollneck or a merino knit does most of the warming. Wool and cashmere stay warm when slightly damp and look smarter than cotton fleece.

03

A jacket that handles wind

Waxed cotton, wool and padded vests do better than thin cotton in winter. A wool worker jacket or a waxed coat goes over a hoodie without bunching.

04

Always a beanie

A ribbed wool or cashmere beanie is the simplest piece of warmth you can add. White, grey and blue go with nearly every outfit here; brown suits earth-toned looks.

05

Heavier trousers

Heavier denim and cotton duck canvas block wind better than lightweight chinos. Wide and relaxed cuts leave room for a thermal layer underneath on very cold days.

06

Shoes for cold days

Suede sneakers are fine on dry winter days. On snow or slush, choose leather with a rubber sole, or a pair with a warm lining.

Questions

How should men layer for winter?

A long-sleeve base, a wool or cashmere mid layer such as a knit or hoodie, and a wind-resistant jacket on top, plus a beanie.

Can you wear sneakers in winter?

Yes, in dry weather. Choose leather or treated suede with a rubber sole, and switch to boots for snow and slush.

Can you wear a hoodie under a jacket in winter?

Yes. A wool or cashmere hoodie under a wool or waxed jacket is warm and looks neater than a sports hoodie.
