Capsule wardrobe for men

A capsule wardrobe is a small set of clothes where nearly every top works with nearly every bottom. The test is not the number of pieces but how often each one gets worn. Moidello's outfits show it: the same jeans, tops and sneakers come back in look after look, combined differently each time.

01

Settle on a colour range first

Pick a base of navy, grey, cream and white, add denim blue, and allow one or two warmer colours such as brown or a muted green. With that range, almost any top goes with any bottom.

Stronger colours are better spent on one item at a time, usually shoes or a cap, than on trousers and jackets you wear several days a week.

02

Two pairs of jeans in different washes

One mid or dark wash in a straight cut and one lighter or grey wash in a wider cut cover most casual days. Add a pair of canvas or twill trousers in cream or sand for days when denim feels too casual.

03

Plain, striped and long-sleeve tops

T-shirts do most of the work. A heavier white T-shirt, a navy one, a striped long-sleeve top and a long-sleeve polo give four different looks with the same jeans. Heavier cotton holds its shape and looks better under an open jacket.

04

One knit and one hoodie

For colder days, a fine wool knit or cardigan and a hoodie in grey or a muted colour. The knit takes you towards smart casual, the hoodie towards the weekend, and both fit under the jackets below.

05

Two jackets with different jobs

A work jacket or chore coat in cotton for mild days, and a warmer jacket in wool, waxed cotton or suede for the colder end of the season. Both should be short enough for wide jeans and plain enough to go over every top you own.

06

Two pairs of sneakers: one neutral, one suede

One clean pair in white, cream or grey leather and one in suede, in brown, black or a stronger colour. The suede pair adds texture to plain outfits; the neutral pair goes with everything else.

07

Let accessories do the variation

A watch, a cap and a beanie change an outfit more than another pair of trousers would. Because they are small, they are also the safest place for colour and pattern.

Questions

How many pieces should a men's capsule wardrobe have?

There is no fixed number. What matters is that every top works with every bottom. Two or three trousers, five or six tops, a knit, two jackets and two pairs of shoes is a practical start for one season.

Which colours work best in a capsule wardrobe?

Navy, grey, cream, white and denim blue combine in any order. Add one or two warmer colours such as brown or green, and keep stronger colours to shoes and accessories.

Can a capsule wardrobe be casual?

Yes. Most of the outfits in this guide are built on jeans, T-shirts and sneakers. A capsule is about combinations, not formality.

How do I start a capsule wardrobe?

Lay out what you already wear most, pick the colour range it suggests, and only buy pieces that go with at least three things you own.
